This is from Milwaukee, RT. For our sleeper suites we got rooms next to each other and had the option of opening the wall between them, but we opted not to do that. Our speaker was not working, at the end, so we missed the announcement. I think either side is nice really, even when passing through Glacier. I didn't see anyone cleaning anything (observation car, door touch points, or community bathrooms or shower during our two days on the train besides in the dining car. The views were spectactular and our trip to Glacier was amazing, but consider a different mode of transport if you want to stay safe. From there it was magic.
We dined on a burger across from Sue and Linda, who joined the train when it passed through St. Paul – Minneapolis. Sounds like a very “cool” ride indeed! Thereâs a true sense of camaraderie that is fostered on the train. Also, the times listed here are accurate only if your train is running on time. The problem taking the Empire Builder heading West from Chicago in the late Fall, Winter and Early Spring is that after Daylight Savings Time starts, in combination with the shorter number of daylight hours during those months, you do not get to the Rockies and Glacier National Park area until after dark. Best I can see is around $1800.

With such a lengthy rail journey, it can be nice to step off the train to stretch your legs, use better restrooms at the stations, or grab something to eat or drink. Wonderful panoramic windows and great thought put into the seating as well! The Empire Builder has long been one of my favorite trains. I have traveled this route several times. Also, the upper level allows you to walk through all the train cars, making it easier to move from car to car. This economical ticket covers two nights of accommodation, a scenic rail journey, and transportation from one side of the US to the other. So we felt that the lack of window washing to be the Empire Builderâs biggest blunder and such an easy remedy! You don’t have access to checked bags during the 48-hour journey, so be sure to bring a change with you. The coach seats were a bit on the hard side, but comfortable enough and extremely spacious. We travelled from Vancouver to Seattle once, only a few hours, but thoroughly enjoyed that so looking forward to the EB! Although definitely sleeper car next time! OK, then let’s look at the true cost of the room. I’m sure you’ll catch some zzzs along the way. The trip was fantastic – seeing America in Winter. If you're looking to enjoy the scenery, the best time would be in mid-June to take advantage of longer daylight hours. However, we would generally caution against pursuing this three-day rail journey using coach seats as we did. Good morning, I can only tell you that we took our trip 22nd of Jun last year from Chicago and it was wonderful from the getgo. I cannot believe they get away with such little cleaning, even if it were non-covid times. Don’t forget to appreciate the sights of America passing outside the window.
We sat on the left side and found it to be very nice. But we didnât book far enough in advance to secure affordable pricing of Amtrakâs premium sleeper options. If you can get by without those, you’d be fine remaining on the lower deck. When we awoke, the landscape outside the window had changed yet again. One would think that travel like this must be expensive, yet prices starting from $146 are pretty affordable! Note: dining car service is included for those with superliner roomettes, which helps to justify the higher cost.
The first time was to Portland. Meals were a bit of a disappointment during these Covid times, especially after hearing about very good meals from my brother-in-law that traveled on Amtrak last year.
