Operating from the University of Chester gives us a competitive advantage of having a nucleus of Subject Matter Experts from many disciplines on-hand to support end data interpretation and application in examining real-world problems.
Having started off down the UAV path as a hobby, Alex has had his aerial imagery appear in both the Daily Post Wales and the Chester Chronicle. Our vision is to offer cost-effective UAV solutions that enable teaching and research teams to focus on their primary activities, safe in the knowledge that aerial platforms are taken care of by competent, skilled and experienced personnel. The first phase of this project, which took place earlier in June, involved the use of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) equipment to ‘see below the ground’. “In summary, what we are doing is applying an analysis of the evidence gathered from studying the impact of the amphitheatre on influencing the historical urban landscape development in Chester, and looking to see whether similar patterns are repeated in York – and, if so, they could lead to the site of the amphitheatre. Gavin Phillips is a senior lecturer in Natural Sciences with a keen interest in the chemistry and physics of air pollution.

Other considerations include proximity to early Christian monuments and continuity of religious precinct boundaries, which may perpetuate symbolic sites of Christian martyrdom associated with an amphitheatre, and curving boundaries, which may be remnant outlines of the signature elliptical shape of an amphitheatre preserved in later street patterns.”, He added: “Significantly, the arena within the amphitheatre, within which the spectacles took place, is usually an artificially created hollow in the ground. All, or any combination of these factors, could be clues to unlocking its location. Informatics Centre Data Management. Although it is assumed York would have such an amphitheatre (the two other permanent Roman legionary bases at Caerleon and Chester did), its location has never been identified, although a number of factors suggest that the area of King's Manor and St Mary's Abbey is a possibility.”.
Kindly sponsored by the President of our Archaeological Advisory Board, Professor Stewart Ainsworth (from the University of Chester and Channel 4’s ‘Time Team’) this exciting event will take place over the course of the next twelve months, as we ask people to photograph Epiacum and the surrounding landscape throughout the different seasons.
In 2019 Chris was helping research for both geography and archaeology teams by designing, adapting and deploying drone systems hosting infrared and multispectral sensors to carry out surveys at remote sites including Coalbrookdale in the Severn Gorge and the Roman fort site of Epiacum near the town of Alston. The team of archaeologists and students from York are led by Tim Sutherland, Research Fellow from the University of York, with support from professional archaeologists Graham Attwood from Magnitude Surveys Ltd, and Mitchell Pollington, Principal Archaeologist with Lanpro.

This includes tracking individuals, counting populations and provide remotely sensed imagery.
Evidence being examined includes looking at the physical and positional relationship between the amphitheatre and the legionary fortress, layout of the fortress itself, topographic factors (such as selecting a position where the amphitheatre could be seen from the main approach routes, thus reinforcing Rome’s imperial grandeur on the landscape), and distribution of amphitheatre-related finds.
