There is a Mission card for each of the three Missions – you can score between 1 and 3 VPs depending on how far you have progressed along the mission track, and there is also a Mission VP card, worth 1 VP, given to the player furthest along the track. I don’t like the way the rules are laid out for reference to a question. The other crew members remain on the space and can be picked up and moved again on a later turn. Explorers & Pirates does a good job of introducing new rule sets that extend and expand the Settlers game. As a result, they may not find Explorers and Pirates to be their Catan expansion of choice. It was expensive for what it is, and was missing a few of the main board pieces. You also have very intuitive icons on components like the hexes, and the victory-point tracks do a great job of making it clear how many victory points you get for the various missions. Instead it's the place where you can build ships and the stuff that goes on ships: settlers and (later) crew. E&P shakes things up, and it shakes them up a lot. Spices for Catan: In this scenario, you can discover tiles that are already occupied by Natives.
Harbor settlements are a pseudo-replacement, which allow for construction of ships. It does take some time to learn, but is fun. Beyond that, each of the various game systems add some nice variability to the game. There's also spice and fish, which do contributes to the theming of the game. Explorers and Pirates was designed as a self-contained standalone expansion to the game with a variety of different setups, and in that it does a decent job. Catan: Explorers and Pirates is a very nice addition to the Catan universe. All of the previous rules apply to this module. The harbor is a settlement upgrade (like a city), but it doesn't generate 2 resources when it's rolled. Gold pieces are a new form of currency.
Take that however you will. Explorers and Pirates is as varied as it is robust.
My conclusion is that Explorers and Pirates will appeal the most to die-hard Catan fans. The Mission(s) take the place of these VP producers. Game was brand new in the box, excellent shape. That’s where things start to get tactical—if Red decides to use his first boat to rush out first-thing in order to discover as many islands as possible, he’s using his starter boat, which has a settler packed on. They cost slightly less, but still provide two points. For all of the alterations made, players still take turns and progress through the game in the familiar Catan manner until one player reaches the VP amount specified in the scenario. This is E&P’s biggest strength and weakness. Mechanically, though, the Native Islands are by far the most influential one of the new three, allowing a player to surge from last place to first just by the luck of stumbling across a few powerful bonuses before everyone else. First of all, you (of course) have the terrific "building cost" cards, which do a great job of showing you what to build with which resources -- just like in the original Catan game.
Overall, I really enjoy not just the variable gameplay that these rules variants introduce, but also the variable options that show up within the game when you're using one or more of them -- as you now have Settlers strategy, plus more. ( Log Out / Gold, of course. The island of Catan has been fully settled.

I would, however, recommend adding the variants in one at a time over a few sessions like the game suggests; unless your group is made of seasoned gamers, it can be overwhelming seeing all of the options you have with your boats and remembering all of them correctly on your first game.

I suppose you could play 4 introductory games (as the rules suggest) to get to the full Explorers and Pirates, but I do think that most accomplished gamers should be able to handle it on the first go – knowing that this first game will probably be upwards of 2 hours for a first game. Three modules provide a variety of new options and can be mixed, matched, or even combined into one massive game.
Maybe before you do that, you’ll want to drop off the newly picked up crew member on another spice hex to double up on your load, allowing you to deliver to spice bags at once to the council. The boats add an interesting element of interaction that’s absent in Catan, given that they can actually move around.
Whoever contributes the most to defeating the pirates gets a point bonus. Pirates are mean like that. You’ll need to bring crew across the sea to fight those pirates. I enjoyed playing it, and it feels quite different from any other game in my collection right now. “Additional rules” teaches how to build and load your settlers, but says nothing about unloading them, because unloading cargo is covered in the “Ships” section of “Land-Ho.” However, the process is also taught again in the other three scenarios, which talk about when you can load/unload in relation to specific tiles. Once that happens, that player becomes the Christopher Columbus of Catan.
Overall, this is way more tactical than base Catan, so even if this game does feel different, if you’re looking for a fresh Catan experience that demands a lot more thinking on your feet, E&P offers that in spades. These fish can be picked up by any player, so you’ll have to be wise if you want to get there first. Time: 30min to 2hrs (depends on which modules you play), Times Played: 2 (1 play with Land Ho! 3rd edition or earlier, you might consider it – I played a few times with the third edition, and the mismatched art and lack of border tiles was ugly, confusing, and encouraged me to get the 5th edition base game. Physical Quality: 4 This helps mitigate awful dice luck because it means everyone generally gets at least one half a resource with each roll. 5 out of 5. It is most definitely an expansion as you will need knowledge of the rules of the base game as well as some of the components. Which components used from the base Catan and/or Explorers and Pirates depends on the scenario played, and the full rule book will specify the details of each scenario. 5 out of 5. Beauty: The painting on the hexes are attractive; The graphic design of elements like the rules and the victory-point tracks are top quality; and even the wooden meeples are cut into a lot of attractive and interesting shapes (though I never found the "settlers" that intuitive).
It was only on a border piece, and it doesn’t ruin anything. This offered a similar experience to what we knew and loved, but added in some of the enjoyable aspects of T&B without changing the entire fundamental focus of the game.
