Having trouble understanding Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?? At one point he compares himself to a biblical plague washing away the sin and unbelievers by committing necessary evil in god's name: What a job to have to do, he thought.
I know PKD was quite the mystic and strongly believed in religion, and maybe he was trying to say something along the lines that christianity and its believer's ability to empathize with christ is a key feature of their humanity and one of the reasons they can even believe in a god, however I dont think that he is saying that our ability to believe in a god is what exclusively makes us humans over artificial constructs, or in this book, the androids. PKD appears to have suffered from mental illness that unfortunately manifested itself as religious fanaticism: Throughout February and March 1974, Dick experienced a series of hallucinations, which he referred to as "2-3-74", shorthand for February–March 1974. They give up easily and accept death when they are cornered, meaning they don't appreciate their own lives; maybe because they easily rationalize how impossible it is to survive these individual inescapable situations, I don't know. Still, they somehow compliment each other. She acted like a "jealous" mistress who was spurned by her lover and sought revenge. But in Do Androids Dream, memory isn’t a reliable tool for humans looking to understand their environments. On the one hand, they seek to value and have empathy for all life while on the other they make clearly distinguished lines of hierarchy where some life is valued more than others.

I thought that the Empathy Box and Mercer visions were mostly the hallucinogenic effects of the people undergoing the experience, not actual external events that happened. PKD is the underappreciated master of the short story. Not affiliated with Harvard College. I think it's brilliant. I completely agree. They're all a little more intense, I thought. Yet, Dick seems to say, the values of Mercerism - namely, shared empathy and the collective will to survive - have transcended any notion of whether the religion's symbols are false or not. it was nearly 200 years old. The short stories are superior to his novels. Anyway, even though the androids are in many ways improved simulacrums of humans (as in better then the android versions before them), including having fake memories etc., they lack some emotional raw drive for survival (self-preservation in all circumstances) and lack an ability to appreciate life. It is the collective of humanity that must band together in order to survive the decay of the world around them. Because the state of nature is so dire, pets are extremely valuable, and it’s a mark of social status to own a sheep, a goat, or a horse.
Mercer, and Mercerism, intrigued me, it captivated me with the mere idea of it, then it threw me through a loop when, at the end, it was apparently proven fake by an android - while at the same time appearing to be somewhat real in the minds of Deckard and Isidore. Although if you're up for another psychological mind-fuck there is always UBIK. All those moral questions about the treatment of androids as slaves or murdering them with how the story went out of it’s way to show us how human-like they are?
It takes five full pages for a character to buy a goat and ONE FRIGGIN' SENTENCE for a character to "fall in love". But just to be clear this post is going to contain spoilers for “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep” by Philip K. Dick; doubly so since the majority of my problems are with the ending. And this is not bad at all.
Why did there need to be any sort of "love" storyline anyway? I read that first scene with Decker and his wife arguing about the mood organ, and right there I was hooked. I just finished his fantastic, albeit short book, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Buster Friendly conducts a scathing investigative report on Mercerism and fully exposes the religion as false. Get it? Have you read it or has this made you want to read it? The ending is a bit of a let down though.
I would actually disagree with one of your assertions: That the book leaves it open whether human empathy and android empathy are noticeably the same. I'll be sure to check out both!! But in another way Mercerism is very real because its ritual and feelings can make life meaningful for believers. I think the spider scene demonstrates that even the least of humanity (Isidore) has much more power to empathize than any artificial being can. -Camus, The Myth of Sisyphus. I also really liked the questioning of the methods of determining androids from humans - it leaves open the moral questions of whether they can be exploited for specific ends, and especially how it mirrors the way that our current society diagnoses and pathologizes mental illness. The whole VALIS series is my favorite. "My students can't get enough of your charts and their results have gone through the roof." Do Females Dream of a Respectable Representation? This need, and the manifestation of this need, has made Mercer real in a way that the androids and Buster Friendly cannot truly understand.

Here, Dick attempts to show how organized religion might be false in a strict sense of the world, but how the values of that religion can transcend its falseness. I've read most of his books. They only have the ability to take menial jobs and they are not allowed to emigrate to Mars so that the pure colony there will not be contaminated. I couldn't help myself but read some primers to get discussions going. My favorite quote was: "The old man said, "You will be required to do wrong no matter where you go.
