For sure. In Yamatai, 2-4 players compete to build palaces, torii, and their own buildings in the land of Yamatai. The game includes ten numbered action tiles, each showing one or more colored ships and with most showing a special action.
I’m so glad I could inspire you to get your hands on the game.
I think the most standout mechanics has to be the fleet tiles, which I really did like.
This does mean it’s a bad game just not an excellent one! There have even been some reports from people with colorblindness that says Yamatai is all but unplayable. In turn order (where the player is on the turn track), players take it in turns doing up to five actions.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 April 2019, Great game and great value. Once all of the starting spaces are taken, players will need to match the colour of the previous ship in the chain before placing a new one, although when adding a second or third ship, the same player may add ships of any colour. Instead of building you also have the option to pick up culture tokens on the islands (in fact you can only build on an island that does not have a culture token on it). The first game you’ll be very focused on what you can do and how you can build that building and what ships you need for it. I’m going to try to come up with something negative to balance it out again, but may struggle because it’s a great game. But after a play or 2 you’ll quickly realise that the game is not actually that complex to play (while it remains very hard to master). 2) The first turn of the game can be awkward to explain to the new players.
It looks like one of those games that out of the box looks amazing, but once you start playing they give you too many options to really get played in any sort of reasonable time.
It is simple to learn, but difficult to master. Gave 3 stars because of damaged box. The island you want to build it on must have three green boats around it. Generally just a big lovable teddy bear. Each building has a series of boats printed on it, as well as victory points. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness. I really like yamatai but I could never imagine playing it with more than 2. And with so much to do, one might worry that Yamatai is going to get clunky at times. They are all interesting, and there isn’t a single one that is redundant. Seems confusing at first but a couple of rounds of playing and you will get to grips with it. Disclaimer: Sometimes our links will lead to online stores we are affiliated with. Company Registered in England no. Yamatai can definitely be prone to analysis paralysis (AP).
You’ll now have a few different coloured ships, that you can place on the main board. Most points wins. It opened random islands up, as well as made it easier to get specialists – really neat! Once a player has finished placement, he or she may then either claim a culture token from an island adjacent to one of them, or place a building onto an empty island if they have the right ships in hand to complete the build. Yet my main issue with Yamatai is that it doesn’t really excite me. Games that have a well-defined and simple rule set, but offers so much more that just a simple game, are hard to come by, but Yamataï does it so very well.
You can edit your question or post anyway. You can find out more about this here.
Well, each player starts with a player sheet, 10 coins, and a set of standard buildings. I’d barely had any sleep and after a few hours in the press area my mind was a mess of caffeine and future releases. Yamatai looks a lot simpler than Five Tribes.
Other than the occasional specialist with a cool power, most are fairly benign. In a two player game, each player goes twice, having two meeples. If you make a purchase through this we may earn some money. I’ve got it, but sadly it’s on my shelf of shame. Daily Yes, gaming is about the challenge and crunching the numbers at times, but it is also about just having fun. If you’d like to pick up a copy of Yamatai, it sells for about $60. A sucker for beautiful art. Thanks for the comment! Let’s find out. Seeing the constant flow of praise, I was worried I was wildly off base. Boats must be placed in a consecutive line, and the first boat placed each round must either be the same colour as the boat it is next to or start on an empty entry point on the map. Yamataï simply has to receive the highest praise possible, the coveted Scroll of Awesome. Sorry for my grammar skills! Imagine navigating the bustling waterways of the mythical archipelago-city of Yamatai. It just didn’t’ really grab me like other titles in the same vein. Kudos Bruno Cathala and Marc Paquien – it’s awesome.

Approved third parties also use these tools in connection with our display of ads. We’d therefore strongly recommend getting at least three people to play. For me, playing Yamatai was absolutely a case of the latter.
So the real question becomes if the mechanics are interesting enough. Pan Am is a game about the golden age of air travel. I recommend 100%. But you’ll soon realise that everything you do affects the main board. There are buildings and specialists and these fleets that you collectively own – but ultimately, it all comes down to moving fluidly with the game to work with it and create this city on the sea.
A game set in the Orient that tasks players with building up the capital city with the goal of making it the most prestigious location in the archipelago. The game play is simple to perform but requires some thinking about especially as the board becomes more crowded. That’s usually from recruiting the right specialists, placing your buildings in the best way, and even choosing the right fleet tiles. Yamatai is likely to be an excellent, non-confrontational game for players who want to move their group onwards from outright gateway games like Ticket to Ride, but it still has elements of complexity (and strategy) that can grow with you. The downside of all of these strategies is that it is very hard to be certain you are locking out opponents, and in fact, you simply can’t do so in any practical sense. © 2020 Board Game Quest – Dedicated to the amazing HM. This one falls squarely in the middle-weight of the spectrum as it’s pretty easy to learn, but there is still a lot of moving parts during the game. All in all, a very balanced game. Sorry, there was a problem saving your cookie preferences. Fleet tiles chosen at the beginning of each turn dictate which boats you can place – with the ability to buy at least one more – as well as a variety of other abilities to help extend your influence. Scoring is achieved by adding up the total amount of Prestige Points amassed by each player. Sounds right up our alley.
This year, Bruno Cathala and Marc Paquien teamed up to bring us Yamatai. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon.
Final Score: 3 Stars – A solid middle weight game that, while it can be fun, struggles to make its mark on the genre. Yamatai is a beautiful game with bright, colourful art and wooden pieces. For example Toyo Tama allows players to introduce boats on any side of the board, and if taken early, can give a player free reign over an entire swathe of the board. Bruno Cathala makes some incredible games. Both your go and your opponent’s go benefits the board as a whole. 2 corners of the box were ripped when taken out of the package, Great!
Available buildings are placed down the side of the board, and drawn from a face down stack when replenished, introducing an element of randomisation and forcing players to respond to an ever changing situation. We’ve played so many crunchy games, and so many games of Seafall, that Yamatai kind of acts as a reminder as to what gaming is really about.
