On first impact, Room on Fire is to 2001’s Is This It as the Ramones’ second album, Leave Home, was to their knuckle-sandwich debut — a perfect twin. Cool guys. Great, better even than the last. The bass player cuts his own hair and plays simplistic bass lines. Wisely avoiding the unbecoming screaminess of subpar Is This It tracks like "Take It or Leave It" and "New York City Cops", he instead applies a cough syrupy croon to "Under Control" and "The End Is No End", its bum notes smoothed out by his payphone vocal effect addiction. and "You Talk Way Too Much", it's an extra spritz of tuneship that only assists The Strokes' infectious ways.
Speaking of the originality quotient-- and not to add more historical tinder to the fire of what bands The Strokes supposedly owe a debt to, but-- lead guitarist Nick Valensi is sweating The Pixies' Joey Santiago something fierce here. One of the best things about Room on Fire, the Strokes’ second album, is that, in most of the ways that matter, it is exactly like their first. I love the way this guys screams. No, they aren't as good and are definitely not as brilliant as Tom Verlaine and Co., but they are still one of the most gripping new bands of the past few years in my opinion.
Of course, Julian Casablancas is a far cry from Frank Black as vocalists go, but it can at least be said that he knows his place through Room on Fire. They may not be able to get away with milking this formula for many more albums, but for now, Room on Fire's eleven songs find them drowsily getting away with what they do best. But these guys are cool. At the time, I found myself in the latter category, ironically earning myself a spot on this very staff with a lengthy diatribe against the band's hype machine, socioeconomic background, and rampant influence-pilfering. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. Pitchfork is the most trusted voice in music. Anybody who can get a band like this as much publicity as they have, is a genius.
But the distance and distrust in his songwriting and ashen monotone on Is This It were nothing like this.
Want more Rolling Stone? Bassman Nikolai Fraiture, mostly relegated to backbone status on this outing, carries less of the band's melodic weight than he did on Is This It but gets a front-of-stage moment on the perfectly choreographed breakdown of "Reptilia". There is so much boxy compression on the high-speed bass, guitars and drums in “The Way It Is” that it sounds like the band cut it in the locked trunk of a ’56 Chevy doing 110 miles an hour. I want to be cool to, so I bought the disc. Prime members enjoy Free Two-Day Shipping, Free Same-Day or One-Day Delivery to select areas, Prime Video, Prime Music, Prime Reading, and more. They seemed to exhaust the style of the first two discs, and so has this band.
Every magazine I pick up has their pictures on the cover, and I keep reading that they are the coolest band on the planet. The singer is great, though. The Whiz Kid is the man of the year. Casablancas sings the title chorus of “You Talk Way Too Much” with cold, dry calm — the high, mocking whine of the lead-guitar break provides extra cruelty — and wraps up the brittle reggae of “Automatic Stop” with even less gallantry: “I’m not your friend/I never was.”. was scrapped, and the band's relentless touring failed to lead them down the cockier, arena-rock path some suspected they'd travel. Really poor writing, Mr. Julian. The music is just as terse and unforgiving. Send us a tip using our anonymous form. On first impact, Room on Fire is to 2001’s Is This It as the Ramones’ second album, Leave Home, was to their knuckle-sandwich debut — a perfect twin. Also, stop taking pictures and start learning how to play your instruments. Overall, Room on Fire is a terrific rock & roll album, spare in its production and passionate in performance. He's cool too. or "everything that's wrong with music today!" The rest of the songs from song 3 to the end sound like mud. © Copyright 2020 Rolling Stone, LLC, a subsidiary of Penske Business Media, LLC. Julian must have been drunk when he wrote this mush. Instead, Room on Fire is eleven songs sharing DNA with its predecessor, a follow-up of more sleepy, contagious mono-pop that doesn't sound diligently recorded so much as yawned out.
Fast, FREE delivery, video streaming, music, and much more. He looks moronic. There are also jolts of color and dropped guard — hints of what the Strokes must have hoped for in their aborted sessions for this record with Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich — in the whistling-synthesizer guitar lick in “12:51,” a cheerful shot of ’78 Cars; and the pneumatic, sighing strum of “Meet Me in the Bathroom.” But another of the best things about Room on Fire is that, in the face of hysterical expectation, the Strokes have resisted the temptation to hit the brakes, grow up and screw around with a sound that doesn’t need fixing — yet. Okay, can someone please remind me why The Strokes were such a polarizing force about two years ago? "); what's clear is that The Fab(rizio) Five neither deserve, nor desire, either status-- their goals are about as unpretentious and uncomplicated as possible. I think my indie credibility is intact. “Please don’t slow me down, if I’m going too fast,” Casablancas sings with heavily distorted irritation in “Reptila.” If you want comfort and clarity, you’re definitely in the wrong room.
We want to hear from you! I play it constantly. I keep reading about how everytime one of these band members make a move, they need a beer in their hand. Then this disc falls into a valley of boring, dull, hookless, shapeless, muddy drivel. But the Strokes who made Room on Fire are not the cocky overnight sensations of two years ago. Singer-songwriter Julian Casablancas delivers his put-up-or-fuck-off telegrams in a brusque, corrosive drawl, and producer Gordon Raphael wraps up the whole package with airtight austerity. After all the hype The Strokes received upon the release of their debut album, you would think that all of that acclaim might have gone to their heads.
In my opinion, the Strokes best albums were 'Is This It' and 'Room on Fire'... both should be enjoyed on vinyl! Not cool at all. This was a gift for my gf and she hated it. Like any good New Yorker, Casablancas is suspicious and impatient by nature. ‘Room On Fire’ is a refining and tinkering with The Strokes sound, a carefully calibrated attempt not to fuck up too early in the face of untold temptations. The first 2 songs sound like the sound of this band, the rest is their attempt to move on and sound kind of different, and I hope they don't move on to this the next time. It can be important, even historic. It is not always necessary. Listening to Is This It last week had me scratching my head over how it managed to become the Roe vs. Wade of the rock crit world in 2001, with everyone forced to choose sides: "saviors of rock!" His development is the only newish detail I can detect on Room on Fire, and it's an inspiration that lends improvement; Santiago's beautifully simple lead lines were The Pixies' secret weapon, and Valensi employs a similar humble style to lend a melodic counterpoint to the proceedings.

Nick Valensi’s and Albert Hammond Jr.’s dirty-treble guitars cut ‘n’ thrust over the hard-rubber bounce of bassist Nikolai Fraiture and drummer Fabrizio Moretti. Aren't you supposed to learn that first? This is far from a bad thing, largely because The Strokes seem almost pathologically unable to write a song that isn't immediately catchy. Reports that the band was working with Nigel Godrich (Radiohead's producer) indicated that the band might have been moving in an ambitious new direction - however, the band decided to start from scratch and record with Is This It producer Gordon Raphael again.
Whether showing up at the Halloween party as The Cars' keyboard on "12:51" or contributing slow-hand solos to "What Ever Happened?" Casablancas also appears to have moved beyond the smirking misogyny of his early lyrics, just as the cover art is sagely chosen to continue the abstract graphic theme of the Stateside edition of Is This It rather than the Smell the Glove-style UK version. That there's nothing new or innovative to be found here is sure to be a common complaint, though only those who prize evolution over knowing one's strengths will cry fraud. I adored the first disk; a pop classic.
