Most of the stories are set on Mars, although some—"Rocket Summer," which opens the collection, "Way In the Middle of the Air," and "There Will Come Soft Rains"—are set on Earth. Suddenly, everyone on Earth thought Mars was inhabited by intelligent Martians who built canals to bring water to their cities.
In other words, Bradbury's version of Mars is not so much the way people thought of it in the 1940s and 1950s, when he was writing. The book, as its title suggests, is an account of events situated on the planet Mars. One night, a Martian woman dreams that a rocket comes out of the sky and lands on Mars; a light-skinned man with clear blue eyes is inside the rocket, a human by the name of Nathaniel York.

The story ended with a rocket landing on Mars carrying a family of five: husband, wife, and three sons. Even before humans get to Mars, Mars seems a bit like an American suburb. It's like the old days.
