NAME.—The Gaelic form of the name is Longphort, which signifies a fortress; the word was originally applied to the old circular forts, but in after ages to the more modern stone castles. It was remodelled during the 18th century and between 1802-17 when a hexagonal scheme was used. Longford Castle is located on the banks of the River Avon south of Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. In the same neighborhood the Black River flows southwest through Longford, and enters Leitrim to join the Rinn River.
